Athenian statesman and general,
 Pupil and friend of Socrates.


ALEXANDER THE GREAT (356—323 B. C.)
King of Macedon in Greece. Educated by Aristotle
 He became king of Macedon in 336 B. C. he made
A series of conquests in course of which he captured
 The family of Darius and extended his conquests to
Egypt where   he founded Alexandria; after completely
 Defeating the Persians in 331 he came to India. His
 Horse was named Bucephalus.


ALFONSO THE WISE (1221—1284)
King of Leon and Castile in SPAIN.
 He was the founder of the legal code
 Which became the basis of Spanish
 Jurisprudence. A liberal patron of literature and
Science, he was particularly interested in astronomy.


ALFRED THE GREAT (894—901)
King of England. Himself a man of letters,
 He was also a great patron of learning.
 He was the father of the English Navy
 And compiler of the Anglo-Saxon.

ANNE QUEEN (1665—1714)
Queen of Great Britain and Ireland
From 1702 to the time of her death.
 She was the youngest daughter of
James II and succeeded William iii.

ARNOLD MATHEW (1883—1888)

English poet. Son of the Thomas Arnold,
 The great Headmaster of Rugby, he was
 Professor of poetry at Oxford. He wrote a
 Number of poems, such as Sohrab and Rustum,
The Scholar- Gipsy, etc., works are Essays in Criticism,
First and second series.
